And what's the most efficient way to put on muscle after being an athlete my entire life? 

While high school or college athletics can get you in great shape, you are often training in a more functional manner rather than with the explicit goal of packing on muscle in the right place to optimize your aesthetics. For many people, there comes a time after sports where aesthetics, longevity, & vitality become more important than athleticism for a specific sport.

One of the most important things in my lifting career was understanding the science behind muscle-growth, the importance of rest, and beginning to transition into a bodybuilding style of training (rather than functional training).
